Choosing a bariatric surgeon and practice to go with can be difficult task. So many different surgeons pop up when you search on the internet, and you obviously want to choose someone you can trust when making such a huge life-changing decision such as undergoing weight-loss surgery. The most important things to consider when trying to select someone to entrust yourself to are:
How well is the surgeon going to explain things to me before surgery so that I completely understand everything that is going to happen with my journey?
Am I going to receive all the education I need for this life-changing experience before and after surgery?
The surgery is only part of your weight-loss story - regardless of who does your surgery, it is only natural that you will lose weight because of the changes caused by the surgery. However, it is the education and support from the multi-disciplinary team at the practice who will make the difference between your experience enjoyable and educational - leading to long-lasting successful results. Without a supportive team to help you on your journey, you may find the experience more difficult and unhappy than it needs to be!
Nearly ALL bariatric surgeons have undergone extensive specialist training to develop skills to perform the surgeries. Some surgeons will market themselves as having performed "X" number of procedures to show-off their experience. However, the most important thing is that your surgeon is going to take good care of you, and not be "rushing" your surgery to get more cases done on the operating list, or not be taking as much care with your surgery because they have performed so many operations that it is like second nature to them.
Ensure that your surgeon is willing to take the time to explain things to you until you have no further questions and that you do not feel rushed into making such an important decision.
Baritastic App for Smart Phone This app for iPhone and Android is an excellent way to keep track of your progress after bariatric surgery. It also has ideas for meals and smoothies, and you can even set alarms to remind yourself to drink water, take your vitamins and eat meals!
Bariatric Patients Who Struggle to Maintain Fluid Intake In the weeks leading up to bariatric surgery, purchase a sipper bottle, and get into the drinking routine that you will need to adhere to after surgery. It is best to get the hang of it BEFORE surgery, as it is only going to be harder after surgery if you haven't gotten into the habit already. You don't want to get dehydrated because after surgery you will find it difficult to be able to drink quickly to rehydrate yourself once you fall behind. Bariatric patients should try to drink at least 1.5 LITRES of water per day in addition to their dietary intake. If you struggle to keep on track with your water intake throughout the day, a motivational drink bottle may be the tool that you need!
Optifast and Optislim Both of these are forms of a "Very Low Calorie Diet" (VLCD). They are both similar in nutritional value, with Optislim being more cost effective - when purchased from Chemist Warehouse which seems to have the best price around. You may be asked to go onto Optifast or Optislim prior to undergoing surgery in order to decrease fatty liver, lose additional weight pre-op which may allow for safer surgery. You will take Optifast/ Optislim 3x per day in replacement of your main meals, with vegetables for morning tea and afternoon tea, and at least 2L of water per day.
Protein Supplement After bariatric surgery, your diet is all about PROTEIN! Some people find it difficult to get enough protein into their diet or like to have a meal as a protein shake. Whilst Optifast is an option, it can be costly after some time. A flavourless whey protein is a cost effective way to supplement any meal with protein. The options are endless......... - Mix it with milkshake flavouring for a milkshake, or blend with fruit/ vegetables for a protein smoothie. - Whisk it with an egg and milk then scramble or make an omelette. - Mix it with a soup to make a "super soup"! - Mix it with sugar-free cordial for a liquid protein drink. - Try baking with protein power to make protein bars or cookies. The link below takes you to the BEST VALUE AND CHEAPEST WHEY PROTEIN YOU CAN BUY IN AUSTRALIA at $25 per kg. Do not be fooled by marketing ploys that different supplement manufacturers use - Remember once it is mixed up, your body can't tell what the packet says!
