Baritastic App for Smart Phone This app for iPhone and Android is an excellent way to keep track of your progress after bariatric surgery. It also has ideas for meals and smoothies, and you can even set alarms to remind yourself to drink water, take your vitamins and eat meals!
Patients Who Struggle to Maintain Fluid Intake In the weeks leading up to bariatric surgery, purchase a sipper bottle, and get into the drinking routine that you will need to adhere to after surgery. It is best to get the hang of it BEFORE surgery, as it is only going to be harder after surgery if you haven't gotten into the habit already. You don't want to get dehydrated because after surgery you will find it difficult to be able to drink quickly to rehydrate yourself once you fall behind. Bariatric patients should try to drink at least 1.5 LITRES of water per day in addition to their dietary intake. If you struggle to keep on track with your water intake throughout the day, a motivational drink bottle may be the tool that you need!
Optifast and Optislim Both of these are forms of a "Very Low Calorie Diet" (VLCD). They are both similar in nutritional value, with Optislim being more cost effective - when purchased from Chemist Warehouse which seems to have the best price around. You may be asked to go onto Optifast or Optislim prior to undergoing surgery in order to decrease fatty liver, lose additional weight pre-op which may allow for safer surgery. You will take Optifast/ Optislim 3x per day in replacement of your main meals, with vegetables for morning tea and afternoon tea, and at least 2L of water per day.
Protein Supplement After bariatric surgery, your diet is all about PROTEIN! Some people find it difficult to get enough protein into their diet or like to have a meal as a protein shake. Whilst Optifast is an option, it can be costly after some time. A flavourless whey protein is a cost effective way to supplement any meal with protein. The options are endless......... - Mix it with milkshake flavouring for a milkshake, or blend with fruit/ vegetables for a protein smoothie. - Whisk it with an egg and milk then scramble or make an omelette. - Mix it with a soup to make a "super soup"! - Mix it with sugar-free cordial for a liquid protein drink. - Try baking with protein power to make protein bars or cookies. The link below takes you to the BEST VALUE AND CHEAPEST WHEY PROTEIN YOU CAN BUY IN AUSTRALIA at $25 per kg. Do not be fooled by marketing ploys that different supplement manufacturers use - Remember once it is mixed up, your body can't tell what the packet says!
